Millennium Volunteers Award

Millennium Volunteers Award
What is Millennium Volunteers?

Millennium Volunteers (MV) is a programme designed to recognise and celebrate the volunteering contribution of 16-25 year olds across Wales. The aim of the programme is to encourage young people to take part in volunteering opportunities that can offer them the chance to give 200 hours of their time to a project or projects of their choice. The reward and encouragement comes from certificates awarded to recognise 50 and 100 hours of volunteering as stepping stones towards the 200 Hours Award of Excellence certificate, which is signed by the First Minister of Wales.

MV is part of a UK-wide volunteering initiative and has counterparts in Northern Ireland, Scotland and the V award in England. MV is already a positive thing to include on a CV or UCAS personal profile but work is currently being done with Universities (many of whom run their own MV programmes) to have MV credited on the UCAS form in the future so watch this space!

The programme aims to:

-Make a positive impact within local communities
-Offer challenging and interesting volunteering opportunities for all young people
-Enable young people to acquire new skills and knowledge and develop personally
-Increase recognition of volunteering by young people in the community
-Set a standard for volunteering opportunities in Wales
-Encourage ownership of the programme by young people

Summer Ball 2010

Summer Ball 2010
On the 2nd of July 2010 53 children from the Borough’s Welsh Primary Schools and Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Llangynwyd attended Bridgend Recreational Centre in their best dress and glossy masks to enjoy a Summer Ball arranged by the Initiative. The night was a successful event, with the children and staff having fun, the DJ played fab music, everyone dancing and having a picture taken in their lovely outfits. There was enough food for everyone, the smoothe bar was a success with all the fruit running out by the end of the evening and the chocolate fountain was also a hit.

Everyone attended with a mask to take part in the competition to see who had the best mask. This was a very hard decision to make and because of this two children won Amelie Davies and Gwion Brearley, congratulations to them.

Thank you to everyone who attended and we hope that the dance next year will have the same effect.

Year 10 Welsh gig success!

Year 10 Welsh gig success!
On a very sunny second of April in Blaengarw Workingmen’s Hall, a free Welsh gig was held as the second project under the Bilingual Champions scheme for the County. Some very excitable year 10 students attended the gig from Archbishop, Ynysawdre, Pencoed, Brynteg and Cynffig comprehensive schools.

We were extremely lucky to have a special appearance from Glyn Wise and Magi Dodd from C2, as well as excellent performances from Zimmermans (winners of Battle of the Bands 2008) and Just Like Frank (a very popular band from Cardiff).

The day was a brilliant one, with everyone desperatley trying to catch a C2 t-shirt that Glyn and Magi were throwing out in to the audience... even the teachers! Unfortunatley for me, the saying ‘first come first serve’ was more true than ever... there were none left by the end of the day! Everyone was dancing and singing along – with the can-can and the conga thrown in too! There were a few dissapointed faces when the performance finished to say the least, however i think its fair to say that everyone is now eagerly await the next gig!
